Cue the Music

While the launch at Apple Byte and other stores was smooth, the case was not as smooth or one store in particular – Apple Stonestown, due to a robbery to took place on Wednesday, Nov 1st.

Three men thought it might be a good idea to beat the long queue to get the iPhone X. So, they went on to rob the shipment of the iPhones.

According to CNET, the three men in hoodies broke into a UPS truck parked outside the store as it was delivering the phones and pulled a movie-like heist.

The truck was delivering 313 iPhone X and around 11:15 am on Wednesday. 300 of these phones vanished. According to the police report, a janitor spotted the suspects unloading boxes from the UPS truck and into a Dodge van and snapped a photo. UPS said it’s working with law enforcement investigating the theft.

The total value of the stolen merchandise is estimated to be more than $370,000. The iPhone X, starts at $999 apiece. The suspects haven’t yet been caught.

These phones can be tracked because they are cataloged with a description and serial numbers. But it is a bit more complicated than that.

Not the first time dealing with this

pickpocket

This is actually nothing new.  Stealing iPhones has been a lucrative business. According authorities in the US, smartphone have become a top choice for street criminals, especially teenagers. San Francisco authorities reported that at least 66% of all robberies involved a minor stealing a cellphone.

However, Apple does possess the capabilities to remotely lock the stolen devices, which could mean that these devices might not be as useful or as worthy as expected. This ability has reduced phone theft incidents.

But for professional thieves, the key is to steal these devices before they are being set up. This is significant for the resell value of these devices.

What makes this robbery so different is that it is unclear if Apple will be able to disable these phones or not. The company is yet to issue a statement about the matter.

This is interesting because Apple is hoping to change the mobile phone market with this particular model. iPhone X is one of the company’s most profitable product in years. Many believe that the iPhone X is expected to be the hottest device Apple has ever sold.

This robbery doesn’t affect the delivery of people’s preordered phones.
