AirAsia recently introduced the ASEAN Pass which is a travel pass that allows you to travel to more than 140 routes across ASEAN with 10 or 20 credits.

The travel validity of the pass is either 30 days or 60 days upon the first flight departure date. Advanced booking of at least 14 days must also be made prior to flight departure.

People are confused. How does it work? Is it really CHEAPER?

We’re here to give you some tips on how to make the most out of this travel pass!

How Does it Work?

There are 2 types of ASEAN Pass: The 10 credits pass or 20 credits pass.

Your Asean Pass is valid for 1 year from the date of purchase until you have made your first redemption.

Flights under 2 hours usually requires 1 credit while flights over 2 hours would require 3 credits.

Indonesia’s domestic flight, however, is subject to price control; therefore, redemption is higher and not worth the value.screen-shot-2017-11-15-at-10-48-26-am

You can redeem your flights like this suggestion here:

Or like this:

However, there are 2 things you should keep in mind:

1. You cannot repeat the same destination for this pass. You will automatically not be able to book the same route. For instance, this route is not be possible.

Kuala Lumpur > Singapore > Kuala Lumpur > Singapore > Kuala Lumpur

2. But you CAN do return flight and fly elsewhere from the same destination.

Penang > Bangkok > Phuket > Bangkok > Siem Reap > Bangkok > Hanoi > Kuala Lumpur > Penang

Check Flight Availability

Before you place your booking, you should always check the flight availability. Certain routes have great availability, but others may not.

Before your purchase the ASEAN Pass, you can now see the availability of the flight by inserting the routes and dates you have in mind.

After inserting the routes and dates as shown above, you can click ‘search’ and the system will show you the availability of flights for these routes on the particular dates.

Pay in Malaysian Ringgit (MYR) to Save More

You should consider paying in MYR when purchasing your ASEAN Pass. The currency exchange rate makes it cheaper for you to purchase a $120 pass in MYR (after converting to USD), than a $160 pass in USD.

Choose a credit card without foreign exchange fee to pay for it. You should also check the exchange rate on google to ensure that you’re getting a better deal.

Pack Light, Travel Light

AirAsia only allows 1 carry-on baggage and 1 personal item (handbag, laptop, purse) with a total weight of no more than 7kg. Any more than that, you’ll have to pay for checked luggage fees which could add up to quite a hefty amount ($15 for 20kg and $52 for 40kg). You could save up more by packing light.
